The Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce is seeking a Junior Graphic Designer to join the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology (RTMP) in-house design team. This position requires a Drumheller residency. The Junior Graphic Designer will work in collaboration with other sections of the Museum to interpret and provide creative solutions for the development and implementation of 2D-related design projects for 470,000+ annual visitors. Some of the projects will include: public and school program materials, illustrations for use in education and exhibit projects, support for marketing, and exhibit materials.
Job Description
The design team at the RTMP works together to create solutions for both 2D and 3D projects throughout the Museum. They assist in defining key messages, creating platforms through which they are presented, and achieving learning objectives of the end users.
Primary
- Layouts for educational program materials/brochures/reports/certificates, recommendations for digital presentations, video and sound editing, information design for charts/graphs, interactive design for mobile applications, and online forms.
Secondary
- Illustration – for educational materials/marketing and exhibit projects
- Marketing – layouts for coupons/vouchers/ads/website and social media platforms
- Exhibits – wall graphics, text panels, case labels, wayfinding/informational signage (for physical or digital output), recommendations for material or structural choices
- Miscellaneous internal/external materials – layouts and photo manipulation for PowerPoints, user guides, PDF forms, layouts for proposals/reports
Required Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in graphic design or visual communications
- One to two years relevant work experience
- Experience working in a museum or cultural institution considered a strong asset
Skills Involved
Design Expertise
- Maintain visual standards throughout the Museum (e.g., typefaces, graphics, colours, composition, photo quality) and understand how these choices affect audience engagement/comprehension
- Visualize the 3D execution of 2D graphics
- Synthesize ideas/intentions into tangible signage/structures, assist fabricators with installation
- Generate various mock-ups in multiple iterations to arrive at final designs, incorporate others’ feedback/critique throughout the process
- Communicate a consistent brand over a wide range of media
- Liaise with out-of-house printers and fabricators to ensure final designs are delivered on-time, according to vision, and of high quality
- Monitor galleries regularly and identify deficiencies to resolve
- Self-manage expectations of time and effort (i.e., know the amount of time needed to complete a task or how much can get done within a defined period of time)
Research and Strategic Thinking
- Push for constant innovation in all projects, take initiative in finding ways to improve currently ingrained methods
- Research successful/inspirational precedents and implement methods in own projects
- Analyze audience interaction/comprehension and assess design’s effectiveness
- Maintain proficiency with current software techniques/trends and fabrication processes, seek out training opportunities to widen knowledge
- Stay up-to-date with a knowledge of the Museum’s offerings, subject matter, and associated fields (e.g., science and technology)

- Collaborate with colleagues from different sections (including marketing, communications, education, research, fabrication, project management), utilize their expertise in own work, establish project goals together
- Thrive in an open office environment with regular design critiques
- Cultivate the design studio as a place for sharing ideas and challenging one another to push for a high standard of quality in every project

Software and Media
Digital software
- Proficient with Adobe Illustrator/InDesign/Photoshop, Acrobat
- Familiar with Excel, Sketchup, video/sound editing software
- Adaptable to new software as needed
- Able to maintain organization/documentation of shared digital files/archives
Other media
- Proficient with in-house print production (large-format printing, lamination, mounting, vinyl cutting and application), including preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, stocking inventories, and evaluating new equipment
- Able to generate quick/rough sketches, high-fidelity illustrations, simple paper prototypes
- Familiar with building/signage materials, substrate printing, fabrication processes
Compensation:
Salary $37,500 – $41,500 per year
