Preparation and Field Technicians

The Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce is seeking an individual to provide technical support to Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology (RTMP) preparation and casting programs. The job duties will include field collection and laboratory preparation of fossil specimens using a wide variety of techniques, materials, and equipment. Other duties include: molding, casting and painting casts as required for research, display, and education; providing assistance with exhibit installations and maintenance as required and responding to public site reports.


Responsibilities:

  • Field collection and laboratory preparation of primarily vertebrate fossil material
  • Molding and casting of primarily vertebrate fossil material
  • Interacting with Museum visitors while working at the gallery preparation table

Requirements:

  • BSc. in Palaeontology, Biology, or Geology
  • Experience in the field collection and laboratory preparation of vertebrate fossil material
  • Experience in molding and casting fossils
  • Strong knowledge of the field of palaeontology, especially as it relates to Alberta’s fossil record
  • Class 5 driver’s license
  • Knowledge of 3D technologies (scanning, photogrammetry) is an asset
  • Knowledge of GIS is an asset

  • Independent worker with strong problem-solving skills
  • Must have demonstrated excellent communication skills, working well in a team environment
  • Must have an excellent knowledge of the best practices and policies for the collection and preservation of fossil material 
  • Commitment to safety in a field and laboratory environment

Compensation: 

  • Salary $39,500 – $43,000 per year
  • Group Health Benefits Plan available
  • Group RSP Plan available

Term: full-time ongoing position August 1, 2023
