The Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce is seeking an Exhibit Designer to join the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology (RTMP) in-house design team. This position will work in collaboration with other sections of the Museum to interpret and provide creative solutions to develop and implement 3D-related design projects for our 470,000+ visitors. Some of the projects will include: in-house and off-site exhibits, parade floats, hands-on interactives, way finding, signage, etc.

All designers at the RTMP work together to create solutions for both 3D and 2D projects around the Museum. They assist in defining key messages, creating platforms through which they are presented, and achieving learning objectives of the end users.

Primary Responsibilities for this role include working closely with design and project teams to:

• Synthesize ideas/intentions into tangible structures, assist fabricators with installation
• Generate various mock-ups in multiple iterations to arrive at final designs, incorporate others’ feedback/critique throughout the process
• Produce concepts through a variety of mediums (e.g., 2D & 3D software, sketching, clay, wood etc.)
• Produce clear and complete drawings/renderings for in-house fabrication team and external vendors
• Liaise with in-house and out-of-house printers and fabricators to ensure final designs are delivered on-time, according to vision, and of high quality
• Monitor galleries regularly and identify deficiencies to resolve
• Provide support for basic fabrication, exhibit install and demolition
• Solicit quotes and services from vendors
• Push for constant innovation in all projects
• Research successful/inspirational precedents and implement methods in own projects
• Analyze audience interaction/comprehension and assess design’s effectiveness
• Maintain proficiency with current software techniques/trends and fabrication processes, seek out training opportunities to widen knowledge
• Stay up-to-date with a knowledge of the Museum’s programs, subject matter, and associated fields (e.g., science and technology)

Technical Skills
• Digital Software
• 3D CAD software (Rhino3D, SketchUp)
• 2D software (Indesign, Illustrator & Photoshop)
• Microsoft Office Suite (though we are a Mac-friendly environment)
• Photography
• Ability to work with various physical mediums like: paper, cardboard, foamcore, clay, acrylic, sintra, plywood, hardwood, steel, aluminum, substrates (e.g., dibond)

Qualifications Required
• Degree in exhibit or industrial design
• Two to four years practical experience
• Experience working in a museum or cultural institution considered a strong asset

Application deadline: Consideration of applications will begin April 23, 2018; however, the competition will remain open until a suitable candidate is found.
Term: to start as soon as possible
Hours of work: Monday to Friday; 8:15 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
